25 dead, several injured in Mumbai after houses collapse due to heavy rain

As many as 25 people were killed in several incidents of houses collapsing due to heavy showers in Mumbai on Sunday. 

17 people died after a wall collapsed on some shanties in Chembur's Bharat Nagar area.

A similar incident was reported from Vikhroli where a ground-plus-one residential building collapsed killing three people, as per the city's municipal corporation.  

Rescue operations are underway as more people are feared to be trapped in the debris of the building, according to officials.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief on the loss of lives and hoped for a speedy recovery of the injured. 

The Prime Minister's Office tweeted that the families of those who died would be given a sum of ₹2 lakh each from PM's National Relief Fund and ₹50,000 would be given to those who were injured.

President Ram Nath Kovind also extended his condolences for the deceased.
