One of Ukraine’s and Europe’s biggest iron and steel works plant in Mariupol has been badly damaged in Russian shelling, according to Ukrainian officials

A video of explosions and large plume of smoke at the Azovstal plant was shared by a Ukrainian lawmaker.

The steel plant’s director general Enver Tskitishvili also confirmed the news on messaging app Telegram. He however did not talk about the extend of the damage.

Azovstal is part of the Metinvest group, which is controlled by Ukraine's richest man, Rinat Akhmetov.
