A submersible boat used for taking tourists to see the wreckage of the Titanic has gone missing in the Atlantic Ocean, sparking a frantic search and rescue mission, according to the BBC.

It is, however, not known if there were any people on board the vessel when it went missing.

Submersibles often take tourists to see the famous shipwreck that sits 3,800m down at the bottom of the Atlantic. The site is about 600km off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.

Titanic, the largest ship of its time, hit an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York in 1912. More than 1,500 passengers and crew out of the 2,200 on board died when the ship sank.
