In a fresh flashpoint between the US and China, Taiwan's president visited the American state of California and met the Speaker of the US House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy.

Tsai Ing-wen told reporters that America's "unwavering support" is a reassurance that the people of Taiwan are "not isolated" and "not alone".

Beijing has objected to Tsai's US visit, but Washington claimed that it was a personal trip.
