Pakistan: first transgender TV anchor faces murder bid, shot at outside Lahore house amid threat calls

Pakistan's first transgender television news anchor has narrowly survived a murder attempt.

Marvia Malik was shot on 23 February 2023, according to reports. She was targeted outside her residence while returning from a pharmacy in Lahore.

The 26-year-old told police that she had been receiving threatening calls for raising issues concerning the transgender community. Malik had relocated from Lahore due to the threats.

She was in the city for a few days for surgery, according to news outlet Dawn.

Marvia became a television anchor in 2018 at Kohenoor News, creating history in the Islamic nation.
