Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is facing criticism following a bold declaration that may put his reputation at stake. Known for delivering impassioned speeches, Sharif fervently vowed that his name would no longer be Shehbaz Sharif if Pakistan fails to surpass India in economic development.
During a recent rally in Dera Ghazi Khan, Punjab, Sharif was animated, continually gesturing and emphasizing his points. He assured attendees of his government's commitment to improving circumstances for the average Pakistani.
"We will work day and night to ensure the situation in Pakistan improves. The Almighty has always blessed Pakistan," he proclaimed. However, in a surge of fervor, he stated, "My name won't be Shehbaz Sharif if due to our efforts Pakistan does not leave India behind" in terms of development.
The prime minister further swore on the life of his brother, former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, adding, "I am Nawaz Sharif's fan, his follower. Today, I swear on his blessed life that till the day I have the energy and the will to do so, we will all work together to take Pakistan to greatness and defeat India."
Sharif's visit aimed to reassure citizens of the government's intention to tackle economic and social issues. He announced infrastructure projects to address these concerns in a region plagued by economic challenges. Pakistan's economy has been struggling for years under substantial international debt, prompting austerity measures.
Following his rally, Sharif faced significant online backlash, with critics decrying his comments as "tall promises" unsupported by tangible outcomes. Social media users, notably on X, ridiculed the prime minister's claims.
Prior to these remarks, Sharif had called for renewed dialogue with India, which insists Pakistan eliminate terrorism before any discussions can occur. As India's Ministry of External Affairs reiterated, "Talks and terror cannot go hand-in-hand."
