Multiple flights across Europe were delayed after the United Kingdom’s air traffic control experienced a “technical issue.” However, the UK airspace remained open.

While the cause behind the issue is still being investigated, authorities applied traffic flow restrictions to maintain safety.

The UK’s National Air Traffic Services, which experienced the failure, manages over 2.5 million flights in a year.

“Engineers are working to find and fix the fault. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause,” NATS said in a statement.

“We are continuing to work hard to resolve the technical issue. To clarify, UK airspace is not closed, we have had to apply air traffic flow restrictions which ensures we can maintain safety,” it later updated.

British Airways said it was working with NATS to "understand the impact" of the issue, and said it will keep customers updated. Other airlines are also asking customers to check for updates.
