Amid the reports of alleged mob violence in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan targeting foreign students, the Kyrgyz foreign ministry on Saturday assured that the situation was under control hours. The development came after the Indian Consulate in the country issued an advisory for its nationals to stay indoors,
The Kyrgyz government reported that about 15 locals sought medical check-ups following a recent incident, with no fatalities among foreign students. The Kyrgyz foreign ministry stated that law enforcement agencies promptly detained those involved, including foreign and Kyrgyz citizens. The situation is now under control, with the safety of citizens and public order ensured. Meanwhile, the government urged media and foreign diplomatic missions to refrain from spreading false information.
In a statement, the Kyrgyz foreign ministry said that "destructive forces are deliberately disseminating untrue and false information" about the situation in Bishkek. It said the situation in the city is "calm and under full control", adding all necessary measures have been taken to ensure security.
Earlier, reports indicated that several Pakistani students in Bishkek were injured in mob violence late Friday night after a brawl involving Pakistani and Egyptian nationals. However, no deaths have been confirmed.
Notably, India Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar on Saturday said he's monitoring the situation in Kyrgyzstan and urging Indians there to stay indoors.
The number of Indian students in Kyrgyzstan is estimated to be around 15,000. It is not immediately known how many of them are in Bishkek.
