German far-right party Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) is on course for a historic win in the country's East. Exit polls show AfD in the lead in Thuringia, signaling the first state election win for the far right since World War II. In Saxony, also in East Germany, Exit polls show CDU in the lead with nearly 31.9% of the votes, and AfD not far behind with 30.7%. Both states signal a worrying shift in German politics. An anti-immigration, anti-Islam, anti-asylum party is gaining support in a region where the Nazis first won power in 1930, before taking control of Berlin three years later.
