A 73-year-old Australian man jammed three button-style batteries into his penis. After this, he sought urgent medical help. His case was published in the Urology Case Reports. In the report, it was mentioned that the unidentified man had been intentionally shoving batteries into his penile urethra for 'sexual gratification.'
The man admitted that he was regularly inserting foreign objects without them getting stuck inside. However, when he inserted the batteries this time, it moved further up the penile urethra due to repeated failed attempts at self-removal.
The study authors also noted, "To the best of our understanding, this is the first reported case of urethral necrosis with button battery insertion."
The man went to the emergency department with moderate penile pain, severe paraphimosis and obstructive urinary symptoms including weak urinary flow, straining and a sensation of incomplete bladder emptying.
After several failed attempts, doctors were finally able to remove the batteries using forceps. In the study, it was also mentioned that all the extracted batteries were coated with black tar-like material.
The researchers said, "Given the complexity of his injury, it was deemed that formal penile urethral reconstruction would likely require a 3-stage repair."
