The 4th of January is commemorated as World Braille Day every year. It marks the birth anniversary of Louis Braille, the French educator who invented Braille, a reading and writing system for the visually impaired and blind persons. The day seeks to raise awareness on the importance of enhancing access to the blind by producing works in Braille. It also aims to raise awareness on the issues faced by them. The Covid-19 pandemic spelt a major blow for the visually impaired community, and specially for those who rely on touch to access information and communicate, the United Nations said. It urged the need to enhance accessibility to ensure inclusion of all persons.
