Kanpur Police has apologised after a woman in the city died on Friday night because she and her family got stuck in traffic because of restrictions imposed due President Ram Nath Kovind's visit.
50-year-old Vandana Mishra, who was the head of the women's wing of the Kanpur chapter of the Indian Association of Industries, had to be rushed to the hospital on Friday night after she fell seriously ill. Reportedly, she had recently recovered from Covid-19. The traffic on the hospital route was stopped to make way for the President's convoy.
The Kanpur Police tweeted an apology on Saturday saying they were deeply sorry for the demise of Vandana Mishra and that the incident is a lesson for the future.
They also tweeted that the President had inquired about incident and asked the police to convey his condolences to the family.
A senior police official has been asked to carry out an inquiry, and a sub inspector and three constables have been suspended over the incident.
