If you feel the tendency to overeat when in emotional distress, you may not be alone. Researchers at Harvard Medical School have confirmed that stress eating is real. In fact, overeating is a corollary effect of stress. Long term tension and worry produces a hormone called cortisol. This is the hormone which increases appetite and thereby increases the desire to devour food in such circumstances.

Interestingly, several studies have classified a particular type of food which people tend to binge on whenever they feel uneasy. Foods which are high in fat, sugar, or both are consumed the most during stressful situations. Upon ingestion, these sugary, fatty items have an effect which moderates tension related responses and emotions. Therefore these are considered to be comfort foods as they seem to counteract stress.
