'West Side Story' premiere in New York: Steven Spielberg re-adapts a masterpiece with finesse

Steven Spielberg's upcoming musical 'West Side Story' was screened in New York and the first reactions seem to be ecstatic. Spielberg walked the red carpet along with his star cast.

The film is set in 1950s New York and is loosely based on William Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet'.

A film of fierce rivalries and young love caught in the crossfire, the film chronicles two star-crossed lovers, Tony and Maria, who are each associated with rival New York street gangs.

'West Side Story' is an adaptation of the iconic 1957 musical by Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein and the late Stephen Sondheim, who passed away over the weekend at 91 years of age.

Actor Rachel Zegler makes her feature film debut in the iconic role of Maria. She's joined by Ansel Elgort as Tony, Ariana DeBose as Anita and Rita Moreno, who played Anita in the 1964 adaptation of West Side Story, which won 10 Oscars including Best Picture.

'West Side Story' hits cinemas in India on December 10, the film will be available on Disney+Hotstar.
