Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of age-related dementia, affecting hundreds of millions of people worldwide and there is currently no effective treatment.

For the research, experts analysed data from more than 7 million people and used computer modelling to look for drugs that might target areas in dementia.

After six years of follow-up, the team found that men on Viagra had a substantially lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease compared to non-users. They also observed that the drug increased brain cell growth. The correlation was consistent even for those with hypertension and diabetes, researchers concluded.
