Vegetable Prices Soar: Price of tomato, onion as well potatoes are sky rocketing and is hardly any solace to the consumer as the govt claims the prices are lower than last year. The average price of onions (over 100 centres in India) is at Rs 40/kg which is a Rs 12 jump from last month's purchase price.

The actual purchase price for most essentials is much higher especially in cities dependent on cross state transport for these vegetables. Tomato prices in Kolkata has skyrocketed to Rs 93/kg while onions in Delhi were being sold close to Rs 70/kg..

The Centre on Sunday said onion prices are being stabilised with the release of buffer stock, while efforts are on to soften the rates of tomato and potato.

Record high fuel prices adding to transport cost and untimely rains damaging crops has led to the sudden spike in prices which are likely to remain high in the near future.
