In a development that could trigger an India-US diplomatic row, the US Navy has announced that it has ‘asserted’ navigational rights in the Arabian Sea and inside India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), without India’s consent. The 7th Fleet of the US Navy has announced that its warships USS John Paul Jones asserted navigational rights and freedoms approximately 130 nautical miles west of the Lakshadweep Islands. The US said its act was consistent with international law while India’s claims were not in order of the international law. The Indian Navy and the ministry of external affairs are yet to respond.
