A man in UP's Kasganj was found dead under suspicious circumstances in police custody on Tuesday.

22-year-old Altaf was accused of eloping with a girl and had been detained for interrogation. The police have claimed that he hanged himself. But the family of the youth are alleging murder.

Police said that the man "asked to go to toilet" at the police station. When he did not return after a few minutes, the cops went inside and found him dead.

Police claimed that Altaf hanged himself with the string of his jacket.

Police claimed that the man was rushed to the hospital where he died after being treated for some time. A primary probe revealed negligence on the part of five police personnel, following which they were suspended.

Altaf's father Chand Mian has, however, refused to believe the police version and suspects foul play.

The police’s theory that Altaf had hanged himself using the string of his hoodie is being questioned as the pipe, from which, the police say, Altaf hanged himself, is merely two feet from the ground.
