The United Kingdom has reported its first two cases of the new Covid-19 strain Omicron. Health Minister Sajid Javid in a statement said that both cases are linked to travel from southern Africa while adding that both patients and their families are self-isolating.

Israel and Belgium had reported their first cases of Omicron on Friday.

The new variant with its multiple mutations has put countries across the globe on high alert. The WHO has said this variant is more transmissible than the Delta variant.

The variant was detected by scientists in South Africa and is believed to be behind the recent spike in Covid-19 cases in the country.
