Bhavani Devi, the first-ever fencer to represent India at the Olympics also became the first to win a bout at the Games as she made a winning start to her historic Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020 on Monday.
Bhavani showed nerves of steel as she beat Tunisia's Nadia Ben Azizi 15-3, in the Women’s Sabre Individual Table of 64 bout. She didn't concede a single point in the first 3-minute period and raced to a commanding 8-0 lead.
However, she went down fighting against World No. 3 Manon Brunet of France 15-7 in the Table of 32 bout. With that, India's maiden campaign in Fencing at the Olympic Games came to an end.
The 27-year-old from Chennai made history by becoming the first fencer from India to make it to the Olympic Games and trained extensively in Italy.
