Thousands of Cubans marched on the streets of Havana on Sunday to protest against food shortages and high prices, and the lack of response from the authorities.

In one of biggest anti-government demonstrations in the island nation, many young people took to the streets in Havana, throwing stones at policemen, which disrupted traffic for a few hours. The protesters were cheered by citizens from balconies in the residential parts of the capital too. Eventually the police moved in and arrested several protesters.

Cuba is going through its worst economic crisis in decades, along with a resurgence of coronavirus cases, as it suffers the consequences of US sanctions imposed by the Trump administration. Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel has accused the “Cuban-American mafia” of stirring up trouble.
