They’re so common but so annoying, we’ve all suffered from momentary hiccups. But for some, the problem can persist for much longer. Now, researchers have devised a device that could prove to be a simple and effective solution for your next bout of hiccups.
Designed by Dr Ali Seifi, the Director of the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit at the University of Texas, the HiccAway is an L-shaped plastic device that is supposed to be used as a straw to quickly cure hiccups.
To prove the tool’s efficacy, the team tested the HiccAway with 249 volunteers and published their findings claiming a 92 per cent efficacy in the journal Jama Network Open. However, experts have flagged the limitations of the team’s research, which did not include a control group.
Some have even asked whether such a product, priced at $14 or roughly 1,000 rupees no less, actually serves any real demand? We’ll let you decide that for yourself!
