Twitter has made a portion of its source code publicly available on GitHub, including the algorithm used to recommend tweets in users' timelines. The move is aimed at increasing transparency and addressing concerns from users and lawmakers about how social media platforms select content for their users. The decision was reportedly made at the urging of Elon Musk who believes that code transparency will lead to higher trust among users and improvements to the product. The repositories on GitHub exclude code related to Twitter's ad recommendations and details that could compromise user safety, privacy, or efforts to prevent child sexual abuse material on the platform. Twitter's move towards transparency comes after parts of its source code were leaked on GitHub.
