Apple supplier Jabil's Indian unit has started making components for AirPods and is shipping the plastic enclosures to China and Vietnam, according to a Bloomberg report.
This move supports Apple's plan to diversify its manufacturing outside of China. Apple wants to increase its iPhone production in India to 25 percent from 5-7 percent currently, says Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.
Apple has been expanding in India since starting iPhone assembly there in 2017 and recently asked suppliers to move some AirPods and Beats headphone production to the country.
Foxconn is preparing to make Beats headphones in India and hopes to eventually produce AirPods as well, while Chinese supplier Luxshare Precision Industry and its units also plan to help make AirPods in India.
