Apple has confirmed that its iPhone lineup will soon come with a USB Type-C port for charging.
As of right now, Apple ships its iPhones with a lightning port, which is not used by any other smartphone company since it is a proprietary standard. Now, the company has confirmed that the USB-C port will soon replace the lightning port on iPhones.
Greg Joswiak, Apple's Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, spoke at The Wall Street Journal's annual Tech Live conference and confirmed the news.
In response to a question about whether Apple will follow a new law passed by the European Union that says all companies must ship their devices with a USB Type-C charger by 2024, the executive said that Apple would follow the new laws.
Joswiak also said at the conference that Apple and the EU have been at odds for a long time. As an example, he said that the EU wanted Apple to use a micro-USB charging port at one point. He also said that neither the lightning port nor the USB Type-C port would have been made if Apple had done what the European government asked for at the time.
However, Joswiak did not specify if Apple is solely producing a USB-C model for the European market while continuing to sell phones with lightning ports in other markets.
Apple has already switched to a USB-C connector on its new iPad lineup, so it would make sense for the company to standardise USB-C across all its mobile products.
It's important to note that the Apple executive also didn't say exactly when Apple will switch all of its iPhone models to using USB Type-C ports, but reports suggest that the switch will happen sooner rather than later.
Aside from these reports, it's not hard to guess that Apple will have to make the switch in all of its devices by 2024, as the new European law requires.
