According to an internal memo obtained by MacRumors, Apple plans to add the original 12-inch MacBook to its obsolete products list on June 30. The company considers a product obsolete if it has been more than seven years since it was last sold, and the original 12-inch MacBook was discontinued in April 2016. The original 12-inch MacBook was Apple's thinnest and lightest laptop ever, but it was also criticised for its lack of ports and its butterfly keyboard, which was prone to failure. Apple replaced the original 12-inch MacBook with a new model in 2017, and it has not released a new 12-inch MacBook since then. Apple will continue to sell software updates for the original 12-inch MacBook until at least September 2025.
