Apple has taken the wraps off a completely redesigned MacBook Pro lineup, introducing breakthrough technologies that mark several historic firsts for the Mac. Available in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes, the new pro machines combine an industry-leading tandem OLED display, touch capabilities built directly into the screen, the Dynamic Island, and Apple’s blistering M5 Pro and M5 Max processors into a thinner and lighter chassis.
At the forefront of the update is the brand-new PROLED XDR display, which brings tandem OLED technology to the Mac. Engineered to deliver exceptional front-of-screen performance, the display achieves up to 2,000 nits of peak HDR and SDR brightness alongside an incredible 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio. This setup ensures deep, true blacks and brilliant highlights, offering professional colourists, photographers, and creators a portable, reference-grade monitor.
The screen also introduces support for a super-wide colour gamut covering both P3 and Adobe RGB, making it easier to handle colour-critical workflows ranging from high-end video editing to medical research imaging. Furthermore, an advanced display engine controls luminance and colour at the sub-millisecond level, while an optional nano-texture etched cover glass cuts down glare and reflections in bright ambient environments.
In a major interface evolution, MacBook Pro introduces Touch directly to macOS. Rather than an overlay, the touch sensor is built straight into the display panel to minimise latency, giving users the sensation of interacting directly with their content. Everyday actions, like pinching to zoom, swiping through web pages, or tiling windows, all of them work seamlessly alongside traditional trackpad gestures and keyboard shortcuts.
This new touch layer unlocks entirely new workflows for professionals. Designers can now use the entire screen as a drawing canvas without being restricted to the trackpad, musicians can play polyphonic software instruments and drum pads directly on the glass, and developers can test touch-based iOS applications natively. Major third-party apps, including Adobe Lightroom, DaVinci Resolve, Blender, Canva, and Microsoft Office, are fully optimised to take advantage of the new touch interface out of the box.
Powering these workflows are the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, built to handle intense computing tasks like compiling massive codebases, rendering 3D animations in Cinema 4D, or running local large language models (LLMs) with hundreds of billions of parameters. Each GPU core features integrated Neural Accelerators and a third-generation ray-tracing engine, supercharging AI workloads and graphics-heavy rendering.
Despite packing workstation-grade power and a redesigned thermal architecture that keeps performance sustained, the new MacBook Pro models are significantly lighter and sleeker. The 14-inch version weighs in at 3 pounds (half a pound lighter than before), while the 16-inch model drops to 4 pounds. Both configurations manage up to 24 hours of battery life on a single charge.
Other internal and external upgrades include the arrival of the Dynamic Island on Mac as a hub for Spotlight and Live Activities, an upgraded six-speaker audio system with 50 per cent deeper bass, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and up to three Thunderbolt 5 ports. Out of the box, the machines run macOS 27, integrating Siri AI across system menus and productivity apps.
