TATA IPL 2023 SRH vs KKR: Kolkata beat Hyderabad by 5 runs in last-over thriller

Kolkata Knight Riders beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 5 runs in the TATA IPL 2023 in Hyderabad on Thursday.

Deciding to bat first, Kolkata Knight Riders lost opener Gurbaz for a golden duck in the 2nd over itself courtesy of Marco Jansen.

Jansen went on to take another KKR batter out of the game as Venkatesh Iyer (7) lost his wicket in the very same over.

Opener Jason Roy who managed to score just 20 runs on the night was dismissed by Kartik Tyagi who was playing his first game of the season.

With KKR struggling at 35/3 at 4.4 overs, skipper Nitish Rana (42) and Rinku Singh stitched up a 61-run partnership to bring some stability in the side.

Rinku Singh top scored for the visitors with 46 runs as KKR managed to put up 171/9 on the board.

In reply, Sunrisers Hyderabad's opening pair of Abhishek Sharma (9) and Mayank Agarwal (18) were dismissed for a collective total of just 27 runs within 4 overs.

Rahul Tripathi did try to push things ahead for the home side in the powerplay with a 9-ball 20 but was dismissed by Andre Russell in the 6th over as well.

Situation looked bleak when Harry Brook was taken out of the game on a duck as well which saw Hyderabad tottering at 54/4 in 6.2 overs.

It was skipper Aiden Markram (41) and Heinrich Klaasen (36) who stitched up a 70-run stand for the home side and took them to 124/4.

Needing 38 off 30, Sunrisers were in the driver's seat. But Klaasen's wicket gave KKR an opening.

Skipper Markram scored 41 runs but got out at a very wrong timeAbdul Samad's 21-run cameo was not enough as the home side faltered right at the end.

Varun Chakaravarthy was the hero as he successfully defended 9 runs in the final over to give KKR the crucial 2 points.
