Defending champions Australia were subjected to their biggest defeat in T20 World Cups when New Zealand thrashed Aaron Finch's men by 89 runs at Sydney Cricket Ground in the Super 12 opener on Saturday.

Having put into bat first, Finn Allen deflated the hosts right from the word go with his whirlwind 16-ball 42. His 51-run opening stand with Conway got the Kiwis off to a flying start.

After Allen’s departure, Devon Conway took over and continued pummelling the Aussie bowlers all over the park. The in-form Conway ensured the Black Caps never lost momentum in the middle overs.

Jimmy Neesham's late flourish allowed the Black Caps to put up a mammoth 200-3 with Conway finishing unbeaten on 92.

Chasing the mighty total, Australia got off to a horrible start, losing their top 3 inside the power play. From thereon, New Zealand bowlers kept picking the Aussies off one by one. Glenn Phillips, in fact, took a stunner in the outfield to end Stoinis' 14-ball stay in the middle.

With a score of 28, Glenn Maxwell was the highest run-scorer for Aussies while Tim Southee and Mitchell Santner took three wickets apiece.

The defending champions were bowled out for just 111 runs with 17 balls to spare, giving New Zealand their first win in 11 years against Australia in Australia.
