In a shocking update, Sri Lankan batter Danushka Gunathilaka has been arrested in Sydney on rape charges.


According to a report in PIT, Gunathilaka was arrested and taken to Sydney City police station in the wee hours of Sunday following an investigation into an alleged sexual assault of a woman on November 2.


The New South Wales police, on its website, mentioned about the arrest of an unnamed Sri Lankan national. According to details on the wesbite, a 29-year-old woman had been sexually assaulted at a residence in Rose Bay.

The two allegedly met on an online dating application.


The report further stated that the Sri Lankan team has left Australia without 31-year-old Gunathilaka.


The Island nation was eliminated from the ICC T20 World Cup in the Super 12 round.
Gunathilaka played against Namibia in the first round but was later ruled out of the tournament due to injury.
