Somalia's representation at the World University Games in China took an unexpected turn when a seemingly untrained female sprinter, Nasra Abukar Ali, participated in the women's 100-meter race, taking more than 20 seconds to complete it. The performance raised eyebrows and drew widespread criticism, prompting the country's Sports Minister, Mohamed Barre Mohamud, to publicly apologize and take immediate action.

The Sports Minister expressed his dismay over the selection process, stating that the ministry was unaware of how Nasra Abukar Ali was chosen to represent Somalia at the prestigious event. Adding to the controversy, allegations emerged that the runner was a relative of Khadija Aden Dahir, the chairwoman of the national athletics federation, leading to her suspension as directed by the ministry.

The situation further escalated as Somalia's university union clarified that they had not officially sent any athletes, including runners, to China. The video of Nasra Abukar's agonizingly slow run circulated on social media, drawing widespread attention to the embarrassing performance.

Despite finishing significantly behind the other runners in her qualifying race, Nasra Abukar showcased an unusual reaction by doing a little skip in the air as she crossed the finish line. The incident has raised questions about the selection process and oversight for future sporting events representing Somalia on the international stage.
