Alfa Romeo racer Zhou Guanyu survived one of the horrific accidents in the history of Formula 1 events at the British Grand Prix.
The Chinese driver, Mercedes' George Russell, and Alpha Tauri's Pierre Gasly were bogged in a three-car contact which saw Guanyu's vehicle flipping upside down and rolling over the fencing in the first lap. After sliding from the race track, his car hit the barriers at a high speed and halted upturn between the armco and catch fencing. He was removed safely after some struggle by the rescue team. He was declared fit later.
In a Tweet, the 23-year-old rookie driver who was the first Chinese driver to participate in Formula 1 confirmed that he had no serious injuries and thanked 'Halo' for saving his life in a Tweet later.
Apparently, if the frightening accident would have taken before 2018, the driver would not have survived. Formula 1's Halo cockpit protection device was pivotal in guarding Gunayu's life. Last year, Lewis Hamilton credited the titanium device for saving his life at the Monza GP.
Meanwhile, George Russell who sprinted from his car immediately after the crash to check on Zhou is being complimented by the netizens for his spontaneous action.
In the same event, that Ferrari's Carlos Sainz won, Williams driver Alex Albon also suffered a separate accident at the first corner. He too received medical attention and was declared fit later.
