Naomi Osaka's return to Grand Slam tennis at the Australian Open concluded with a closely contested first-round defeat to France's Caroline Garcia. Osaka, a two-time Australian Open champion, was participating in her first major tournament since the US Open in September 2022.

Following a break from the sport due to the birth of her daughter last year, she faced a challenging match against the 16th seed, ultimately losing with scores of 4-6, 6-7 (2-7).

Despite not managing to secure a break point, Osaka's performance against Garcia was commendable and showcased her resilience.

The Japanese tennis star, a winner of four Grand Slam titles, had taken a hiatus from tennis in September 2022, citing mental health reasons. After welcoming her daughter Shai in July, Osaka decided to return to competitive tennis for the 2024 season.
