In the realm of Asian Games weightlifting, triumphs for Indian athletes have been elusive. The memory of our last victory in this arena takes us back to a different era, a different millennium—1998 to be precise—when Karnam Malleswari secured the silver in the games held in Bangkok.

India have won 14 weightlifting medals at the Asiad, an achievement to be proud of. Yet, a gold has remained a fleeting dream, having won only 5 silvers and 9 bronze medals in the past.

Standing at the forefront of hope is Mirabai Chanu, a stalwart in weightlifting. Tokyo Olympics witnessed her brilliance where she secured a silver. A former world champion and the reigning Commonwealth Games champion, Chanu will be hoping to end India's 25-year-old medal drought at the continental multisport event.

As she makes her Asian Games debut at Hangzhou 2022, her determination to bring home the glory burns bright. She even skipped the World Weightlifting Championships 2023 to remain fit for the Asian Games. After all, she was forced to miss the Jakarta Games in 2018 due to a back injury.

And now Chanu stands on the brink of history, eager to grasp the sole missing piece for her cabinet and to take her place among the greatest Indian legends.

Hangzhou beckons!
