The Hyderabad shuttler fought hard as she won the first game but a point penalty for Sindhu for time wasting between points in the second game when the 4th-seeded Sindhu was leading shifted the momentum on top-seeded Yamaguchi's side. The game then went to a decider which the world champion Yamaguchi won. Earlier, Sindhu defeated Chinese shuttler He Bingjiao in the quarter-finals to guarantee a medal at the continental event.

Notably, this is the second Asian Championships medal for the former world champion. Sindhu had won the Asian Championships bronze in the 2014 edition of the event in Gimcheon, South Korea.
