Kane Williamson-led New Zealand team made a thumping return to the tournament afters buffering 4 losses back to back by defeating Sri Lanka by 5 wickets.

With this victory, the Kiwis have strengthened their position in the 4th position in the Cricket World Cup points table.

After this defeat, Sri Lankan team who were already out of the competition ended their campaign at the 9th spot with just 2 wins and 4 points in 9 matches. Sri Lanka's net run rate is -1.419.

While India at no. 1, South Africa at 2nd place, Australia in 3rd have already qualified for the semifinals, the fight is for the 4th and the final semis spot. The battle is between Pkaistan New Zealand and Afghanistan. With 1 match remaining, Pakistan and Afghanistan who are at 5th and 6th spot respectively have mathematical chances of taking the 4th place

Below them are South Africa with a total of 12 points with 6 wins in 8 matches, while their net run rate is +1.376. Australia team is in third place in the points table and their net run rate is +0.861 with 6 wins and 12 points in 8 matches.
