The English Premier League have announced the postponement of this weekend's fixtures following the death of Britain’s longest reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.

In a statement issued on Twitter, the Premier League said 'To honour her extraordinary life and contribution to the nation, and as a mark of respect, this weekend’s Premier League match round will be postponed, including Monday evening’s game.'

They further informed that the updates regarding the postponed fixtures during the period of mourning will be provided later.

While the British Government had earlier in the day said that there was no obligation to cancel sporting fixtures, the Premier League and the English Football League have decided to postpone the games as a mark of respect and honour.
