Lionel Messi and FC Barcelona was one the most beloved unions in world football. And had one of the saddest ends too.

In 2021, before Messi left the club for good, a long standoff ensued between him and Barca.

The 36-year-old star was hopeful that the stalemate would end, his friend and former Argentinian player Sergio Aguero has revealed in a Twitch interview.

'During the Copa America, Messi had the Barca jersey in his room. Every day he (Messi) would tell me, I think they renewed my contract,' Aguero began the heartbreaking ordeal of Messi.

He added, 'You are going to have to take a photo of me with the jersey for the official announcement. And every time we were prepared they told him not yet.'

Despite the club's agreement to extend Messi's contract, it was not possible due to La Liga's wage cap rules.

The Argentine star eventually left and signed with Paris Saint-Germain.
