The IPL has seen phenomenal growth in terms of value ever since it was launched in 2008. And IPL chairman Arun Dhumal believes IPL has 'transformed world cricket' with the ripple effect seen in the way the game is played in other formats.
The T20 franchise league was worth just over $ 1 billion in its early phase and then was valued at $2.5 billion in 2017. The combined IPL media rights were sold for a staggering $6.17 billion in 2023 for the next four years.
Dhumal also endorsed IPL and other franchise leagues as the reason for the growth of women's cricket in non-traditional countries like Thailand and Japan.
Dhumal, however, pointed out he doesn't 'see any possibility' of a second version of the IPL later in the season given the packed calendar for cricket in the next four years.
The BCCI has only released the schedule for the 2024 IPL season from 22nd March to 7th April. With the government of India confirming that general elections for parliament are to held in April-May, there is every possibility that the remaining fixtures of the 2024 IPL season be moved to the UAE (United Arab Emirates).
The 2024 season of IPL (Indian Premier League) will kick off with a match between the defending champions Chennai Super King, and Royal Challengers Bangalore in Chennai on Friday.
