IPL 2024 Auction on Tuesday proved to be a historic day in the cash-rich league's history. Australia's World Cup-winning captain Pat Cummins became the most expensive buy ever in the IPL for a brief period before his compatriot broke that record.

Cummins was sold for ₹20.50 crore as Sunrisers Hyderabad broke the bank for the 30-year-old. Mitchell Starc later went for ₹24.75 and Cummins slipped to the 2nd spot on the all-time list.

Interestingly, Cummins had skipped last year's IPL as he wanted to concentrate on ODI cricket.

He, however, entered this year's auction after winning the cricket World Cup, which triggered an intense bidding war between SRH and the Royal Challengers. Hyderabad went all out before acquiring him in the end.

The record was earlier held by England's Sam Curran who went for ₹18.5 crore to Punjab Kings in the 2023 auction.
