CWG 2022: India’s top medal hopes on Day 3

The quest for medals in weightlifting will continue on Day 3 as 3 Indian lifters will compete on Sunday for a medal finish at Birmingham 2022.

Indian young guns Jeremy Lalrinnunga, Poppy Hazarika and Achinta Sheuli who are making their Commonwealth Games debut will all aim to win a coveted CWG medal at the marquee event.

Youth Olympic Champion weightlifter Lalrinnungu who missed the Tokyo Olympics berth will battle in the men’s 67 kg category. His event will begin at 1.30 PM IST. On the other hand, Bengal weightlifter Sheuli will compete in the men’s 73 kg category, starting at 11 PM IST.

Meanwhile, in the women's event, Assam-based Poppy Hazarika, 23, who won a silver medal at the Commonwealth weightlifting championship in 2021 will compete in the 59kg category, from 6.30 PM onwards.

While 19-year-old Jeremy who hails from Mizoram won the 2021 Commonwealth Championship, Sheuli, 20, won the Commonwealth weightlifting championship last year. He also won silver at the Junior World Weightlifting Championships in 2021
