Sawan, also known as Shravana is an auspicious and holy month in which devotees offer prayers and seek blessings from Lord Shiva.
As per the Hindu calendar, the Sawan month occurs immediately after the Ashadha month. This year the month began on 25th July and will go on till 22nd August. Several other festivals like Teej, Raksha Bandhan and Krishna Janmashtami are also celebrated in the holy month of Sawan.
During the Sawan month devotees visit temples, offer prayers and observe a fast every Monday. Over lakhs of worshippers also carry out a Kanwar Yatra to Hindu pilgrimage places in Haridwar and Gangotri in Uttarakhand. But due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdown, the yatra has been canceled for this year.
Even visiting your local temples may not be possible. But what you can do instead is pray at home, recite the “vrat katha” and offer "Panchamrut", a mix of milk, ghee, gangajal, yogurt and honey along with bel leaves, to lord Shiva. During this month people avoid the consumption of alcohol and non-vegetarian food.
It is believed that those who worship sincerely and wholeheartedly in this month, are blessed with happiness, peace and prosperity.
