Observing that the Uttar Pradesh government cannot be allowed to hold the Kanwar Yatra amid the Covid pandemic, the Supreme Court on Friday said that citizens "right to life is paramount".
"All other sentiments whether be religious are subservient to this basic fundamental right," the top court, in a suo motu case relating to holding of the annual Kanwar Yatra.
While the Uttarakhand government has cancelled the yatra this year, UP govt is planning to go ahead with it.

The Supreme Court said that it will be forced to pass an order if the Yogi Adityanath government failed to reconsider its decision to hold the yatra.
The top court observation came after the Centre also told the court that states "must not allow the movement of devotees" amid the pandemic.
