The R&D arm of Mukesh Ambani backed Reliance has proposed to use anti viral drug Niclosamide as a potential drug against COVID-19.
What is Niclosamide?
Niclosamidean anti-viral drug used around the world for 50 years to treat tapeworm and was planned for use during the 2003 SARS outbreak. New study indicating Niclosamide as 'COVID-19 game changer' was unveiled at Science Council of Asia Conference, the study showed it could also slow down COVID-19.
What Next?
The Government of India has already given clearance to conduct Phase two clinical trials of Niclosamide for COVID-19 treatment. The drug regulator will now evaluate the proposal for public use. Generic versions of the drug are produced by Glaxo in India and cost as little as Rs 23 for 4 tablets.
