Qualcomm has confirmed that its next flagship chipset, the successor to the Snapdragon 888, will not be known as the Snapdragon 898, as was rumoured. Instead, the company’s next flagship SoC will be called the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

Qualcomm said that the new naming scheme makes it easier for consumers to understand and choose between devices with Snapdragon chipsets. All of the company’s mobile platforms will transition to the new naming scheme, with a single-digit series number and generation number. This means we could also see the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, Snapdragon 6 Gen 1, and so on.

Qualcomm also said that it would be dropping the ‘5G’ suffix after chipset names, as the technology has become ubiquitous across their product line, and it is understood that every new chipset will launch with 5G support.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 features

Not much is yet known about the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, as Qualcomm will reveal details about the chipset at the Snapdragon Summit on November 30. An earlier leak has claimed that the new Qualcomm flagship chipset, now known as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, will offer the ability to perform 150W fast charging on certain phones.

However, the first wave of phones with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 are not expected to support this charging rate, as the technology will take some time to implement.
