Quad push: Pompeo meets Jaishankar amid China tensions

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is on a two-day visit to Tokyo to attend the second Quad ministerial meeting along with his counterparts from the US, Japan and Australia. He will hold bilateral consultations over a range of issues including the pandemic. During the Quad foreign ministers' meeting on Tuesday, the foreign ministers of four countries discussed regional issues and collectively affirmed the importance of maintaining a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific. Jaishankar stressed on the commitment to uphold rules-based international order and peaceful resolution of all disputes. Jaishankar met US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Tokyo marking their first in-person meeting since the recent border face-off between India and China. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo described his meeting with Jaishankar as ‘productive’ and said they aare together ensuring a prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
