PM Modi repeals farm laws: what will happen to hundreds of cases against farmers?

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced to repeal the three contentious farm laws, the spotlight is now also on hundreds of cases filed against the protesting farmers across the country.

Some of the farmers were also booked under the anti-terror Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. It is unclear whether the government will take back these cases or police will file closure reports or charge sheets in these matters.

Unnamed sources told News18 that most of the cases are criminal in nature and deal with vandalism, violation of orders, breaking government orders.

The union home ministry had informed Parliament in February this year that in Delhi, 39 cases were registered against farmers protesting against the agricultural laws.

Investigation into these cases is underway. One of the cases also involves green activist Disha Ravi in which the Dellhi Police had claimed that a conspiracy was hatched by pro-Khalistan activists.

According to a statement by the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha, cases have been filed in Haryana against more than 2,500 persons.

The Haryana government, meanwhile, informed in the assembly that 136 cases have been filed against farmers protesting over the three laws.

Reports say in some police stations in the state, officers registered cases against protesters and booked close to 10,000 unknown farmers. 26 FIRs were registered in Sonepat district, 15 in Ambala and 14 in Kurukshetra.
