WhatsApp reportedly recorded over 1.4 billion voice and video calls on New Year's Eve 2020, the highest number of calls ever made on the platform in a single day. The messaging service reportedly saw over 50% calling over New Year's Eve 2019. Parent-company Facebook had previously reported an increase in the usage of WhatsApp in 2020 with the pandemic and lockdowns causing more people to use its video and voice calling functions.
