India's batting woes seem never ending but bowlers once again led the fightback. England ended Day 1 at 53/3 and trail India by 138 runs. Put into bat, batters once again failed to impress as India found themselves wanting at 127/7. But Shardul Thakur, who was returning to the playing XI after 2 Tests, saved Virat Kohli's men the blushes with a 36-ball-57. Despite his effort, the visitors were bowled out for 191. Jasprit Bumrah got the visitors off to a dream start by removing both English openers with just 6 runs on the board. But it was Umesh Yadav, who breached Joe Root's defence and for a change, he was dismissed for just 21. Though England are still in a comfortable position, but the bowlers made sure that the 3 Lions didn't run away with the game.
