Thousands of residents of a Karnataka town poured on to the streets to perform the last rites of a local beggar.

Videos and pictures on social media showed thousands in Hoovina Hadagali in Vijayanagara district gathered to bid farewell to Basava, also known as Huchcha Basya, who died in a road accident Saturday.

A local told the Indian Express that the residents of the town had a special bond with Basya and believed he would bring good luck to them.
